At 58, I find myself at a crossroads I never anticipated. After dedicating over 13 years to an online Tech/Marketing/Customer Support position, I was let go at the age of 56. Two years later, I faced another job loss from my Client Success Coaching role. It’s been a tough road, but instead of letting these setbacks define me, I’m embarking on a new adventure—one that many people over 50 might be curious about. Can someone in their 50s really make money online? I’m about to find out, and I’m inviting you to join me on this journey.
The Reality of Starting Over in Your 50s
Losing a job at any age is tough, but when it happens later in life, the challenges are unique. The job market can be less forgiving, and the skills you’ve honed over decades may feel outdated in the fast-paced digital world. But here’s the thing—experience is invaluable, and with the right mindset and tools, it’s never too late to start something new.
I’ve been online for years and have had a YouTube channel since around 2012, but I never took the idea of monetizing it seriously. My daughter had been nudging me for years to dive into it, but life always seemed to get in the way. Now, with two job losses behind me, I’m finally ready to take the plunge and see if I can turn my YouTube channel into a source of income within the next 90 days.
Why YouTube?
You might be wondering, why YouTube? For one, it’s a platform that has stood the test of time. It’s not just about cat videos and makeup tutorials; YouTube is a thriving ecosystem, if you will, where people of all ages and interests can share their passions, knowledge, and stories. It’s a place where authenticity shines, and for someone like me, who’s spent years in tech, marketing, and customer support, it’s the perfect platform to share my insights and experiences with others who might be navigating similar life changes.

YouTube also offers a monetization pathway that can be very rewarding if done right. With ad revenue, sponsorships, and affiliate marketing, there’s potential to generate a sustainable income. But here’s the catch—getting there isn’t easy. It takes strategy, consistency, and a willingness to learn.
My 90-Day Plan to Monetize My YouTube Channel
So, what’s my plan? The goal is to monetize my YouTube channel in just 90 days. Here’s how I intend to do it:
Content Strategy: I’ll be posting content regularly—three times a week, to be exact. The content will focus on topics I know well, like tech, marketing, and customer support, but with a twist. I’ll be sharing what it means to start over, to rebuild, and to find new opportunities in the digital age.
Engagement: YouTube is all about community. I’ll be engaging with my audience, responding to comments, and asking for feedback. This isn’t just my journey; it’s a shared experience, and I want my viewers to feel like they’re part of it.
Learning and Adapting: The digital world changes fast. I’ll be learning as I go—whether it’s SEO optimization for my videos, understanding YouTube’s algorithm, or finding the right tools to improve my video quality.
Asking for Help: I’m not doing this alone. I’m asking for recommendations on affordable tech gear, like a good webcam and mic for Windows 11. If you’ve got any suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
Can You Really Make Money Online After 50?
The question on everyone’s mind—is it really possible to make money online after 50?
My answer is a resounding yes, but it comes with a caveat. It’s going to take hard work, patience, and a lot of trial and error. But if you’re willing to put in the effort, the possibilities are endless.
The beauty of being over 50 is that you bring a wealth of experience and wisdom that younger generations simply don’t have. You’ve seen trends come and go, you’ve navigated the ups and downs of life, and you’ve built resilience that only comes with age. These qualities are invaluable in the online world.
